Our Story

We will welcome you to Johnfort House and Farm, where you will be staying in our boutique self catering Marianne Cottage or Bartholoemew's Loft. We have been hosting guests at our farm since 2017, with over two hundred and fifty 5* reviews in the process. Now in 2022, we are embarking on an exciting  new venture to combine this accommodation with our tour company 'Ireland - At your Leisure'. We designed the décor of the cottage and the loft to reflect our selves and what we stand for. So much of what you see is original with some very modern takes as well as modern comforts. We cannot wait to start bringing our guests here to Johnsfort and give them the  opportunity to see the whole country from outside their door.

ouR FAMILY

Barbara and Richard with (L-R) Danny, Juliette and Douglas Ball on the top of Lough Crew Megalithic Cairns just fifteen minutes drive from Johnsfort House. These cairns date back to 4000BC. The cairns are also know as Hills of the Witch or Sliabh na Cailliagh in Irish. There are at least 30 passage tombs. Lough Crew is one of the most important prehistoric cemeteries in Ireland and a fabulous fifteen walk uphill with panoramic views of the beautiful Irish countryside.

rICHARD BALL - Your delightful tour guide!

Richard: 'Ireland is an incredible little country especially when you know where to go, and I get huge satisfaction in bringing  guests around, showing it off in all its beauty. I have brought groups all over the land, people of every age from young babies to Octogenarians, sometimes in the same group, and have always managed to adapt the tours to suit their exact needs. I strongly believe that, above all, the guest must always be put first.'

In 2018, I started to work as a tour guide for the first time. I immediately loved it and gained huge experience and some excellent feedback and 5* reviews. Driving around, chatting and enjoying the company of my guests while surrounding myself with some of the most beautiful places in the world, what’s not to like?!!  Ireland is an incredible little country especially when you know where to go, and I get huge satisfaction in bringing our guests around showing it off in all its beauty. I have brought groups all over the land, people of every age from young babies to Octogenarians, sometimes in the same group, and have always managed to adapt the tours to suit their exact needs. I strongly believe that, above all, the guest must always be put first. What one person may like, the next may not and a tour should always reflect that and be able to adapt. Having a small flexible company is the way to provide such detailed, guest focused tours. I thoroughly enjoy the differences of each group, one day I could be climbing a mountain with a group, the next, helping people to discover their ancestral homes and re-uniting long lost cousins.

I am 40 years old and married to Bairbre for ten. We have 3 young children. I have lived in rural Ireland since birth. My life is very much family focused but I do enjoy my own time too. I love all sport, particularly rugby, which I played until my knees said “Stop”!! I love music, from Irish ballads to classical to rock to 90’s dance! (I do draw a line with Ed Sheerin!)

As far back as I can remember I have had an innate curiosity, about everything… what type of tree is that? What happens when I throw this stone? (the window breaks!). What does that hill look like from the top? What is in that field? Growing up on a farm gave me the opportunity to find out for myself. I had lots of space to explore and honestly, I haven’t stopped. I still keep an eye over the hedgerows to see whats in the fields. I still find it hard to resist turning down the little country roads with grass growing on them to see where they lead and is there anything interesting along the way. I also have a deep passion for Irish history, my history. I believe that to understand ones own journey and where they are going they have to understand where they are starting from, and to do that they must know the past. I spend much of my spare time reading up on Irish history, whatever little interesting snippet that has caught my attention that day.  I have followed my forefathers on the farm, which has been in our family for hundreds of years. Working on a farm for over 20 years, you realise that you are a total hostage to nature and weather and need to always think on your feet and adapt quickly.

bARBARA BALL - YOUR HOSTESS

CROAGH PATRICK, CO. MAYO 2019

Barbara: Johnfort House is a beautiful place to live and work.  I feel very lucky that our children are being brought up in the countryside, on a farm and that for the most part it is also my place of work. I am also a teacher and teach two days a week. Since we started the accommodation in the courtyard we have met wonderful people and Johnsfort is an exciting place to live as there is always someone new coming to stay. From the lovely comments and reviews we receive, we feel assured that what we do, we do it well. Marianne Cottage and Bartholomew's Loft have been labours of love for us. We are blessed to have similar tastes and styles and we have the ability to visualize what we both want. This makes decision making a lot easier! From maintaining the accommodation, managing bookings and social media, caring for the animals, to checking all our guests requirements have been met, we are kept busy. With our new venture 'Ireland- At your Leisure', we hope to be even busier and more involved in giving our guests a fabulous stay and a real Irish adventure on the road with Richard. We both love Ireland. So much so we have a target to complete 'An All Ireland Coastal Tour' with our kids by the time our eldest is 18. We map out where we have been and any chance we get we try to cover a new coastal route and mark it off in the diary! It's great fun. We look forward to meeting you and taking care of you at Johnsfort and 'Ireland - At your Leisure'.
